Horse tack is the word used for the various equipment and accessories that horses wear as a domesticated animal. Saddles are used as the seats for the rider, and depending on the riding discipline the horse is trained in, there are three different types of saddles. Stirrups support the riders feet, provide stability, but can also be a hazard if the riders feet get stuck in them. Halters buckle around the horses head and makes it possible for the horse to be led or tied. Bridles are used for riding or driving horses, and usually have a bit in the mouth. Hackamores are bitless designs for bridles, and are often seen with Western style riding. Reigns are what the rider or driver uses to communicate directional commands by use of the horses head. There are many different types of bits, each useful for different types of riding and training. A harness is the device that attaches a horse to a carriage or other type of load and there are only two main styles - breaststrap, and collar and hames style. Breastplates and martingales keep the saddle from sliding back or sideways, ensuring more safety for the rider, and are usually seen in demanding, fast-paced sports.
